While the Estate now encompasses 93 hectares in some of the most prestigious “climats” of Burgundy, one must go back to the year 1880 to feel the pulse of Maison Joseph Drouhin

By focusing on wine quality and respecting the diversity of Burgundy's vineyards, quickly combining the roles of négociant, producer, and above all, owner, the House quickly made a name for itself in the world. The generations of Drouhin succeeded each others, strengthening the House's reputation through the acquisition of numerous prestigious plots all over Burgundy. Guided by the revelation of these magical terroirs, unwavering ethics, and the distinctive Drouhin style characterized by finesse and elegance.

Joseph was 22 years old when he took over a long-established business in the historic heart of Beaune. Starting in 1918, after Joseph the founder, Maurice the visionary aimed to expand the family company

Acquiring vineyards and building his own estate became the bold advancement initiated by Maurice. In 1921, Maurice Drouhin had the opportunity to purchase his first plot in the terroir known as "Clos des Mouches," located at the southernmost tip of the Beaune appellation area, halfway between Corton-Charlemagne and Montrachet. During that time, travel was done on horseback, limiting vineyard acquisitions to the vicinity of Beaune. However, Maurice's choice was not at all arbitrary: for some time, he had considered the wines from Clos des Mouches among his favourite in the region, not hesitating to describe it as the "finest terroir in Beaune". Centuries before, the Clos des Mouches had been the reference for the Canons of Beaune, serving as a viticultural pattern for whole Burgundy. In less than forty years, this courageous Burgundian entrepreneur transformed his name into a respected House and his wines into a guarantee of quality.

In 1957, Robert took over following in his father's footsteps, he continued to expand the family Domaine

Besides the acquisition of numerous Premier and Grand Crus, particularly in the Côte de Nuits, Robert believed in the future of the Chablis vineyards. In the late 1960s, he heavily invested in Drouhin’s presence there, acquiring nearly 40 hectares (in the historic heart of the appellation) as well as the XVIII-century Moulin de Vaudon. He established the House's oenology laboratory with one of Burgundy's first woman oenologists, Laurence Jobard. He also showed great foresight by venturing across the Atlantic to establish, with his daughter Véronique, Domaine Drouhin Oregon in 1987.

1988 marked the year when Philippe Drouhin, the eldest son of Robert, assumed the leadership of the Drouhin estate, ushering in the arrival of the fourth generation

Shortly after taking on this role, deeply concerned about environmental issues and biodiversity balance, Philippe made the decision to steer the estate's practices towards virtuous viticulture, organic and biodynamic farming. Alongside this cultural shift, Maison Joseph Drouhin embarked on a significant effort to preserve the viticultural heritage by developing mass selections within its own nursery. In this regard, it stands alongside other esteemed names in the vineyard as a member of the association for the preservation of Burgundy's grape variety diversity.

Today, three generations of Drouhin oversee the destiny of the Maison

Maison Joseph Drouhin is led by the four great-grandchildren of Joseph Drouhin. Philippe, Véronique, Laurent, and Frédéric, each of them holds key and complementary positions to sustain and expand the family business. They grew up in the vineyards and acquired a deep understanding of wine alongside their father, Robert Drouhin. The fifth generation is also beginning to emerge, with Laurène, the eldest daughter of Véronique, joining the House in 2020.

Vintage after vintage, they uphold tradition and innovate, continually striving for that "elegant perfection" which has earned Joseph Drouhin wines their renowned reputation. Alongside them, a dedicated team of women and men contributes daily to perpetuate the House's tradition of excellence; we often refer to them as the extended Drouhin Family.

A Burgundian Heritage

Over the decades and through various experiences, Maison Joseph Drouhin has built a heritage encompassing whole Burgundy

With 93 hectares, Domaine Joseph Drouhin is currently one of the largest estates in the region. It is spread across the entire Burgundy wine region: Chablis, Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, and Mâconnais. The estate comprises mainly Grand Crus and Premier Crus, planted with the two iconic Burgundian grape varieties: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

This heritage has been built over time through judicious acquisitions and family agreements.

“Climats” that captivate wine enthusiasts worldwide

In the Côte de Beaune, let us wander from Bâtard-Montrachet to Corton-Charlemagne, from Meursault to Pommard. Let us evoke Musigny, Griotte-Chambertin, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze, Bonnes Mares, Les Amoureuses, Clos de Vougeot, or Grands Échezeaux in the Côte de Nuits, among many others. It was thanks to the initiative of Robert Drouhin that the name and "signature" became associated with no less than 14 Grand Crus and around forty hectares in Chablis, under the name of Drouhin Vaudon, from Clos to Bougros, from Mont de Milieu to Preuses. The Drouhin family pays the same level of attention to these wines as they do to their Rully wines in the Côte Chalonnaise or Pouilly wines in the Mâconnais.

For certain appellations, Joseph Drouhin complements its supply by working with long-standing partner winemakers who share their exacting standards.
