The origins : JOSEPH DROUHIN
|
A daring and energetic
man.
|
Joseph DROUHIN was born in the Yonne Department
(near Chablis).
His passion was wine and he decided to found his own négoce
(shipping) company in 1880.
Undeterred by the terrible crisis in the wine business provoked by the
phylloxera epidemic, he always kept faith in the future. His goal in life was to offer quality wines
bearing his name. He decided to settle in Beaune, the capital of the
Burgundy wine trade. He had noticed that
the industrial revolution had vastly improved the standards of living
and
that the newly built railroads made the shipping of wine much easier.
In
those days, wine was shipped in barrels, and then bottled by the
restaurants and wine shops. The distribution network was getting better
organized and people demanded higher quality. For instance, by 1900
Auguste Fauchon had already opened his "Grandes Caves de
Réserves" on the Place de la Madeleine,
and Nicolas had 42 retail outlets in the Paris area !
