PERNAND-VERGELESSES

White

Pernand is one of the most picturesque villages in Burgundy : a few houses huddling close to a pretty little church, with vineyards all around. The origin of the name goes back to the Celts : Per-Nan, according to the experts, means "the disappearing Spring". Both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are planted.

The white wines are made in the same fashion as all other great white Burgundies : harvesting by hand, sorting out the bunches, slow and delicate pressing of the grapes, fermentation and ageing in barrels.

Pernand-Vergelesses blanc is a delicious wine. It has a pale golden colour with a greenish hue. Very often, there is a honeysuckle aroma verging on more exotic flavours when the wine is aerated a little longer. On the palate, the wine shows an energetic character, typical of the appellation : mineral-like and stony, with an intense aftertaste. In keeping with this marked "goût de terroir", Pernand-Vergelesses is ideal with shell-fish, particularly lobster, crabmeat and sea-urchins. It goes equally well with fresh-water fish prepared in a white wine sauce. A classic white Burgundy which deserves to be better known !
