Joseph Drouhin and the "Beaune
Clos des Mouches"
This is a true story. This vineyard near Beaune was one of the very first acquired by Maurice Drouhin in the 1920’s . The name comes from the fact that this slope with its perfect southern exposure was an ideal location for placing bee-hives. In the old days , bees were called honey flies ("mouches à miel") in the patois of Burgundy. This parcel was planted with Pinot Noir (producing a red wine) but some parts were also producing white grapes which we re added to the reds , as is often the custom. In 1925, the white grapes ripened later. They we repicked and vinified separately. The wine was tasted and found excellent. Among the tasters was Eugène Cornuchet, director of the famous Maxim’s Restaurant in Paris and a good friend of Maurice. He asked for the exclusivity in Paris. The rest is history and ever since that year both a white wine and a red wine are made. |
