157th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction

21.11.2017
The 157th Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction was one of the most active Auction we have seen. The Auction totaled 11.1 million euros: 787 barrels of red wine and 157 barrels of white wine were offered. Many bidders from France and abroad were quite active either in the Auction room or on line.
The average increase is about 8% but shows some differences between red wines + 8 % and white wines + 29%. It is mostly the Grands Crus that have forced that increase as the lesser known appellations remain more stable.

What could be the conclusion? The vintage and repute are good, Burgundy wines remain on high demand especially at a time when crops all across France are quite small, and Christie's has done an excellent job to promote the Hospices de Beaune wines worldwide, especially in Asia, and private customers from this region purchased mostly the Grands Crus wines.

The Charity barrel has been sold at 420 000 €, it has benefited 3 Foundations: the Brain research foundation, the Alzheimer research foundation and Expedition Tara.

Maison Joseph Drouhin remained quite active and purchased all lots of the cuvee Beaune Premier Cru Maurice Drouhin that is 23 barrels. This year was the 70th anniversary of Maison Joseph Drouhin donation to the Hospices and we are quite pleased to pay a tribute to him purchasing all lots and having now their exclusivity.

We also purchased:
Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru cuvée Madeleine Collignon
Beaune Premier Cru cuvée Dames Hospitalières
Corton Grand Cru rouge cuvée Docteur Peste
Meursault-Charmes Premier Cru cuvée de Bahèzre de Lanlay
Beaune Premier Cru Les Montrevenots cuvée Suzanne et Raymond

As a reminder the Auction results contribute to help the Beaune Hospital, its maintenance and investments. We have shown to the Hospices our devotion and will be now pleased to mature those barrels in our historical cellars in Beaune.
